Psalm 23  says, ” The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”  But what if what I want is to have a conversation with Him?  What if that’s what I’m wanting?  I know, I know, I can pray and read the Bible and that’s how He talks to me right?  But… isn’t that kind of like me talking and Him just texting?So is He just too busy to talk?

Soooo…when Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice… what He really meant was… when My sheep read My Voice… right?

Sooooooo……..the Church is called the Bride of Christ and our groom says, “Baby, if you need to talk to ME… look at my old texts and figure out what I’m trying to say…oh… and you can also talk to Me… but your messages are going to Voice Mail?”

Isn’t Love supposed to look like this?

You know… Jesus said He came to give us life and life more abundantly.  I don’t know about you but I am feeling the Love much more in the first pic than the second.  Many say our walk with the Lord is not all about feelings… and you know what?    They’re right!  It isn’t!

It is so important to be grounded in the Word of God!   So let’s find out where this fad of “hearing from God” started.

Genesis 3:8 says, ” They HEARD the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day…”

Exodus 19:9 says, “The Lord SAID to Moses, Behold, I will come to you …”

The prophet Isaiah says, “Then I HEARD the voice of the Lord saying…” (Isaiah 6:8)

Deuteronomy 4:33 says, “Has any people HEARD the VOICE of God speaking from the midst of the fire?…”

Numbers 7:89,  “Now when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with Him, he HEARD the VOICE speaking to him…”

.…OK…OK… but that’s Old Testament right?  Aren’t we living in a New Covenant?  Yep:)…so check this out…

Hebrews 3:16, “Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, “Today if you HEAR HIS VOICE…”

2 Peter 1:18, “We heard this VOICE come out of HEAVEN when we were with him on the holy mountain.”

Above Scriptures are quoted with my emphases on words that have to do with hearing…not reading… God’s voice.  Does God speak through His written Word?  Absolutely!  Check this out… Hilkiah found the Book of the Law and gave it to Shaphan who was secretary to King Josiah.  The book was read in Josiah’s presence and Josiah’s reaction was to take what had been read to him so seriously that he got the guys to  bring  a prophetess named Huldah into their action plan.  As a result the future of Israel was changed. ( And yes… for the better…)

The BIBLE is our book.. given to us by the HOLY ONE … it’s full of life and light and God talking…and that is why we need to look at not only what is revealed through it… but at precedents  God set  regarding His desire to talk to us. We need to know that the God who spoke to the prophets…still speaks today.

What would have happened if Isaiah had decided  God no longer spoke and only read what other prophets had written?  I can only imagine how impoverished our Scripture readings would be, if not only Isaiah but  other prophets as well bought into that kind of thinking.   What if they had bought into a line of thinking that said  God only speaks through His previous Words?  What if the Jewish people believed a lie that closed their ears to hear His Voice and stopped actively listening to Him after the first five Books of the Bible were written?  What if the shepherd boy David had bought it?  What would have become of Israel?

He is… a father to the fatherless… and a great lover of our souls.  He longs to talk to us in a myriad of ways… and you know what ?  It’s OK if you listen:)
